TCU Horned FrogsThe Armed Forces Bowl, or Bell Hellicopter Armed Forces Bowl as it is officially named, is an annual college football game played in Fort Worth, Texas. The game is played at the Amon G. Carter Stadium. The Armed Forces Bowl game will feature a team from the Mountain West Conference (MWC) and a team from the Pac 10 Conference in 2007 and 2009. The MWC team will play a Conference USA team in 2008.
The Armed Forces Bowl game was first held in 2003 as the PlainsCapital Bank Bowl, and was played between Boise State and TCU. No Big 12 team was fielded because the Big 12 didn’t have enough bowl eligible teams that season. The Big 12 was again unable to provide a team to the game the following year, and Marshall was selected to play Cincinnati. Kansas played Houston in 2005, and the 2006 Armed Forces Bowl featured Tulsa and Utah.
The Amon G. Carter Stadium, host of the Armed Forces Bowl game, is on the campus of Texas Christian University (TCU). The stadium was first opened in 1930, and it was during the construction of its press box that workers were struck by the number of “horned frogs” or Texas Horned Lizards that came from the ground.
