After tragedy and shame plagued the Baylor Bears men’s basketball program in 2003, and after sanctions punished the team for the seasons afterwards, head coach Scott Drew looks to have put the negative behind them and is building a strong program in Waco. The Bears started the 2007 season blazing. Baylor will vie for an NCAA berth this year and hope to make an impact in the Big 12 tournament as well. The Ferrell Center will be alive with excitement as Baylor fans hope for an unheard of turnaround for their team. Baylor basketball has a rich history, winning 5 Southwest Conference championships in the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s. Additionally, Baylor reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in 1946 and the Final Four in 1948 and 1950. In 1948, the Bears even played for the national championship but lost to Kentucky’s team led by Adolph Rupp.
The Baylor Bears play their home games at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. The Ferrell Center was opened in 1988 to replace the aging Heart O’ Texas coliseum as Baylor’s indoor athletic facility. For players the Ferrell Center has some of the finest basketball locker room and training facilities in the nation, especially with the recent Lt. Jack Whetsel Jr. Practice Facility expansion.
