BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME HISTORY:
The 1st Big XII Championship game was played in 1996 between the University of Texas Longhorns and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Cornhuskers came in to the game as heavy favorites over the Longhorns. But UT quarterback James Brown and running back Priest Holmes led Texas to a shocking upset of the Cornhuskers (37-27). And UT claimed the inaugurual Big 12 Championship football crown.
Since that year the Championship has rotated back and forth between the North & South divisions, every year until 2005 when the Longhorns won their 2nd Big 12 Title. Which followed up their South Division foe, the Oklahoma Sooners, title from the year before.
Since 1996, only 3 teams from each Division had played in the Championship game. From the North Division, only the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Kansas State Wildcats and Colorado Buffaloes have participated in the Championship Game. And they've each won at least one title. And from the South, only the Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma Sooners have participated. And each of those schools has won at least one Big 12 Championship.
The location of the Big 12 Championship football game has moved around to stadiums within the states of the Big 12 Conference. The games inaugural game was played in St. Louis at the Trans World Dome (now called the Edward Jones Dome). Since then it has played in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Reliant Stadium in Houston and Texas Stadium in Dallas.
