CAL GOLDEN BEARS INFORMATION: Location: Berkeley, California Venue: Haas Pavilion Conference: PAC 10 Conference Rivals: Stanford Cardinal
The University of California at Berkeley Golden Bears Men’s Basketball program is always a fun team to watch in the very competitive Pac-10 Conference. Head coach Ben Braun will look to take the Golden Bears back to the NCAA Tournament, something he manages to do nearly every year, but also give Cal’s Pac-10 rivals a run for their money and some stiff competition for a conference title. Haas Pavilion in Berkeley will be roaring this season as the Golden Bears fight for conference glory and a big trip to the NCAA tourney. The Cal Golden Bears first began intercollegiate basketball in 1907. One could argue that Cal’s golden years have long passed. By 1960 the program would have won the last of its 13 conference titles, and its one and only national championship in 1959. The Golden Bears have, however, remained an NCAA tourney fixture, playing in 4 of them since the turn of the century, and also managing to win the NIT in 1999. Some of the well-known and very talented players to wear the blue and gold include Jason Kidd, Sharif Abdur-Rahim, Lamond Murray, and Sean Lampley. The Cal Golden Bears play their home games at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, California. The arena holds 11,877 spectators and is known to be one of, if not the, loudest arenas in the Pac-10 and in all of the NCAA. Originally known as Harmon Gym, Haas was remodeled in 1999, but still retains the intimate qualities of a college gymnasium. There are no sound proofing materials to dampen the noise and the 900 seat student section known as “the Bench” is a notably raucous and energetic bunch.
