The Clemson University Tigers Men’s Basketball team is one of the exciting teams to watch in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) this season. Head coach Oliver Purnell has managed to put together an impressive turnaround for the team. After a successful run in the 1990’s under now Texas Longhorns coach Rick Barnes, the Tigers saw a drop in success. Purnell has since led the team to 3 successful NIT appearances. He’ll have his sights set on ACC glory and an NCAA berth this year.
The Clemson Tigers first began intercollegiate play in 1911. The programs first real success didn’t come until the 1980’s and ‘90s under coach Cliff Ellis with the help of outstanding play from players like Horace Grant and Eldon Campbell. Ellis would coach the team to one of its two regular season conference championships in 1990. In the mid-‘90s Rick Barnes would lead the Tigers to 3 NCAA tournament appearances, one of them to the Sweet Sixteen.
The Clemson Tigers play their home games at Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson, South Carolina. Opened in 1968, the arena holds a capacity crowd of just under 10,000. The venue is well known as one of the toughest arenas to visit in the ACC. The student sections are under both baskets, and make visiting teams’ offensive efforts difficult as they provide a ton of distraction. Basketball fans will appreciate the support for the Clemson Tigers evident at a game at Littlejohn. Buy Clemson basketball tickets today and don’t miss any of the action in the ACC!
