Coldplay formed in 1997 in London, England. The members of the band met while attending school at University College London. Coldplay went through a couple name changes during their early years, and while acquiring additional band members. The early names of the band were Pectoralz and Starfish. Ultimately, the band chose the name Coldplay, after a fellow student suggested they use his band’s name. As Coldplay, the band has achieved world fame through their blend of choral rock and poppy, emotion-driven vocals.
The band’s debut album,
Parachutes, knocked the band into immediate stardom in the UK, as the album debuted #1 on the UK albums chart. From there, the band decided to take their sound to the United States, where the album did well at the 2002 Grammy Awards. Subsequent albums saw a repeat of the success in their debut, and Coldplay has since enjoyed success worldwide.
