2008 San Diego State Football Preview:Head Coach: Chuck Long
With a new coach in Chuck Long and a Mountain West Conference (MWC) championship in their sights, the San Diego State Aztec football program is an exciting one to watch this season. Long is in his first head coaching position but comes with a great resume as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator from the University of Oklahoma. Scenic Qualcomm Stadium looks like it will be the springboard for SDSU’s rise to prominence.

San Diego State University began playing intercollegiate football in 1921 under coach C. E. Peterson. The 1960’s and ‘70’s saw the Aztecs’ most successful football teams under coaches Don Coryell and Claude Gilbert. SDSU’s football program has a long list of famous players and coaches. Marshall Faulk, Brian Sipe, and Isaac Curtis were all Aztecs. Coaches Joe Gibbs, John Madden, and Herm Edwards all either played or coached at San Diego State.
The SDSU Aztecs play share their home field with the San Diego Chargers. The stadium has a capacity of over 71,000. The Aztecs traditionally play their home games at night and wear all black uniforms with red helmets. It’s an intimidating sight to see the SDSU squad take the field for a game.
