Darryl K. Royal Memorial Stadium, also known as “DKR” and Texas Memorial Stadium, is an outdoor football stadium located on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. The stadium is home to the University of Texas Longhorns football team, and was renamed 196 after Darryl K. Royal, Texas’ legendary football coach. DKR Memorial Stadium was originally built in 1924 as a football stadium and track and field facility. The large upper deck was added to the west side of the field in 1969 and the east side upper deck was completed in 1998. When the north side expansion is finished, UT plans to enclose the south end as well, giving the stadium a possible capacity of more than 110,000. The stadium currently holds just over 85,000 spectators. Since the building of a separate track and field facility, DKR is used mostly for football games, though it has hosted other events such as an Eagles concert in the late 1990’s.
DKR Memorial Stadium also stands as a memorial to Texas war veterans. Each year one home game is dedicated as a veteran’s dedication game.
