The DePaul Blue Demons men’s basketball program has a rich history and will be a team to watch in the Big East in the coming seasons. Head coach Jerry Wainright is in the process of completing an exciting rebuilding effort at DePaul. Wainright has led the team to some serious upsets in the past few years beating #16 Wake Forest and Big East champion Syracuse in 2005-2006, and then knocking off #5 Kansas during the 2006-2007 season in DePaul’s biggest upset in school history. Allstate Arena will be rocking this season as DePaul’s fans hope the team can go from giant-killers to giants. DePaul’s basketball program gained notoriety after head coach Ray Meyer took over the reins in 1942. He would coach the Blue Demons for 42 years winning a national championship in 1945, posting 37 winning seasons, twelve 20 plus win seasons, 21 post-season appearances, and a Final Four appearance in 1979. Some of the great players to play at DePaul include George Mikan (one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players), Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings, and Rod Strickland. The DePaul Blue Demos plays their home games at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. The 20,000 seat arena was opened in 1980 and is one of the largest college basketball arenas in the country. The atmosphere at a Blue Demons game is electric and this season will be no different as DePaul looks to climb the ranks of the Big East and re-establish the team as a midwestern basketball powerhouse.
