The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have established themselves as one of the most competitive teams in the very competitive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Head coach Paul Hewitt skyrocketed to the national spotlight in 2004 when he led the Yellow Jackets to the title game of the NCAA Tournament where they would lose to Connecticut. Hewitt hopes to repeat that Cinderella season this year and hopes to compete for an ACC title. Alexander Memorial Coliseum will be load and raucous as usual this year for Georgia Tech basketball. Georgia Tech first played intercollegiate basketball in 1906. Famed football coach John Heisman would eventually coach the team, as well as coaching football and baseball. Bobby Cremins would put Georgia Tech on the map in basketball in the 1980’s and ‘90s. Cremins led the team to its first ACC tournament title in 1985 and the school’s first Final Four appearance in 1990. Some of the great players to wear the Yellow Jackets gold and white include Stephan Marbury, Matt Harpring, Dennis Scott, and John Salley. Georgia Tech plays their home games at Alexander Memorial Coliseum in Atlanta, Georgia. Opened in 1956, the arena holds just over 9,000 spectators. Visitors to Alexander will be awed as they enter onto the main concourse with entrances that are at the same level as the highest seats, giving a view of the court below and the sweeping arches that hold the ceiling several hundred feet above the court. The arena is notoriously loud and every seat is a good one as all the seats are very close to the floor.
