Hopes on campus are high this season as the Cougars strive to make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1992. Hofheinz Pavilion will be electric this year during all of the Cougars home games. The Houston Cougars have a rich past in basketball. The tem has reached the NCAA Final Four 5 times. The team holds 4 conference titles, one in the Missouri Valley Conference and three in the Southwest Conference. The Cougars are most well known for the success of Phi Slama Jamma – the nickname for the 1983 team led by Clyde Drexler and Hakeen Olajuwon. Along with Drexler and Olajuwon, some of the great players to come out of Houston include Bo Outlaw, Charles Herrera, and Elvin Hayes. The Cougars play their home games at Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston, Texas. The arena was opened in 1969 and holds 8,500 fans for Houston basketball games. A 1998 upgrade to the arena provided fans with luxury suites and the players with upgraded locker rooms. Hofheinz has really become a top class facility and is an exciting venue in which to see these upstart Cougars as they re-establish themselves as leaders in the Conference USA and the NCAA tournament.
