Indiana has long been considered a "basketball school", but the Hoosiers have been playing football since 1887 while the IU Basketball team did not start playing until 1901. The Indiana Hoosiers play in the Big Ten Conference against many of the best teams in college football. IU's schedule includes powers Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin. The Hoosiers football team also has rivalry games with Illinois, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Purdue. A great season in Bloomington will see the Hoosiers competing in the East Division for a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game and the chance to play in a top bowl game.

The Battle for the Old Oaken Bucket is the biggest game on the Hoosiers' schedule. Played over 120 times since 1891, there is no love lost between these two in-state rivals. The Old Oaken Bucket Trophy was first awarded to the winner of the 1925 Indiana-Purdue game and continues as one of the oldest and most storied trophies in college football. The Indiana-Purdue game has history, tension and the eyes of all the football fans in Indiana the last week of each season.
