The New England Pats play in the East Division of the American Football Conference of the National Football League (NFL). The New England Patriots first played football as the Boston Patriots in the American Football League. The franchise began in 1960. The team managed one trip to the AFL championship in the 1960’s. In 1971, the team was renamed first the Bay State Patriots and then the new England Patriots. The New England Patriots struggled for much of its history, until reaching the Super Bowl in 1985, only to be trounced by the Chicago Bears. The New England Patriots would then return to mediocrity among financial problems and personnel changes. Rumors of a move to St. Louis were squashed when Foxboro Stadium owner, Robert Kraft bought the team and announced he had no intention of moving it. At this point coach Bill Parcels began a rebuilding process that would eventually end in his being replaced by first Pete Carroll and then the team’s current coach, Bill Belichik. Star quarterback Drew Bledsoe would get injured and be replaced by 6th round draft pick Tom Brady who would lead the team to their first Super Bowl in 2001, but he wasn’t finished there and the New England Patriots appear to be a true football dynasty.
