The Kansas Jayhawks football team has recently begun to seriously challenge its basketball program in national attention. The team began its 2007 season with an incredible winning streak, finding its way into the top 10. Playing in the Big 12, and formerly the Big Eight, Kansas has won four conference titles and had eleven All-American on its roster. Under the leadership of coach Mark Mangino, the 2007 season looks to provide the Jayhawks with a chance to expand that list further. The Kansas Jayhawks play in the very competitive Big 12 conference and have a history rich in talent and rivalries. Legendary stars Gale Sayers, John Riggins, and Dana Stubblefield are among the talented players to have donned the Crimson and Blue. First fielding a football team in 1890, Kansas’ main rival is Missouri, playing the yearly Border Showdown, the longest played college rivalry west of the Mississippi River. Their in-state rivals the Kansas State Wildcats give them a tough game every year in the Sunflower Showdown, playing for the Governor’s Cup. Playing Nebraska every year has also become a rivalry for the Jayhawks. A game played annually since 1905, the Nebraska-Kansas game is the third most played game in college football. While Nebraska has historically dominated this game, Kansas has recently begun to gain the upper hand, winning in 2005 and breaking Nebraska’s 36-game winning streak. The Kansas Jayhawks play their home games at the University of Kansas Memorial Stadium. The seventh oldest college field in the nation and the first to be built west of the Mississippi, Memorial Stadium holds just over 50,000 spectators. A game at Memorial Stadium has become a fearsome experience for visiting teams.
