Although the Wildcats may be better known as a top contender in basketball, Kentucky football has made a strong statement that opponents need to take them seriously. The Kentucky Wildcats football program was founded in 1881. The team did have moderate success in its early history, finding its way into the top-10 six times before 1953, along with playing in 4 major bowl games. Their win over #1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners in 1951 in the Sugar Bowl gave them their only national championship title. The team’s success in the 1940s and 1950s is largely due to the leadership of legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. The current team is coached by Rich Brooks, who took over a team on probation for NCAA violations. Brooks has managed to build Kentucky Wildcats back into an SEC contender, giving them their best record in 22 years in 2006. The Wildcats also managed to break a 9 game losing streak against archrivals Georgia Bulldogs and win a memorable game against Clemson Tigers in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee. The Kentucky Wildcats play their home games at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky. The stadium holds nearly 68,000 spectators. At Commonwealth, you’ll hear the singing of “On, On U of K”, the school’s traditional fight song. In a sea of blue and white, you’ll see the team take the field on the beautiful new Bermuda grass field, hear the roar of the crowd and enjoy the new video screens and sound system. It’s an experience rich in old traditions but with the modern amenities of recently updated stadium. Buy Kentucky Wildcats tickets and watch the team fight their way to the top of the SEC!
