WASHINGTON WIZARDS EXPERIENCE:
The Washington Wizards started out in 1961 as the Chicago Packers.  They moved to Baltimore two years later and changed their name to the Bullets.  The Bullets were a playoff fixture in Baltimore led by greats Earl Monroe, Elvin Hayes, and Wes Unseld.  In 1973, the team moved to Maryland becoming the Washington Bullets, managing to win a miraculous NBA Championship in 1978.  The Bullets were unable to keep their success going through the ‘80s and ‘90s, although they did enjoy some success under the leadership of forwards Chris Webber and Juwan Howard.  The Bullets changed their name to the Washington Wizards in 1997 after complaints that the team’s name evoked violent imagery.  In 2001 Michael Jordan became the team’s president and would even come out of retirement to play for the Wizards for a short time, though without much success.

After Michael Jordan counted himself out of the lineup, the mid-2000's were a very successful time for the team.  In 2004, the Wizards posted their finest record in the league at 45-37, and easily reached the postseason.  It will be interesting to watch this team as they progress into the new millenium, as they are looking strong and posting bigger numbers every year.
