The University of Michigan Wolverines basketball team has in the past been one of the nation’s top basketball programs. With new coach, John Beilein, Michigan Wolverines hope to bring the team back to the top tier of college basketball. Beilein most recently coached at West Virginia and led that team to unprecedented success, a winning record, and NCAA Tournament appearances. Michigan Wolverines have historically been a real contender in the Big Ten, winning 12 regular season conference titles, 6 Final Four appearances, and one National Championship. A home game at Fritz Crisler Arena is great place to watch the new era of Wolverines basketball unfold. As you walk into the arena you can’t miss the glass cases filled with trophies from the Michigan Wolverines’ illustrious past. During the game you’ll hear the courtside student section, the “Maize Rage”, make life tough for visiting teams. In a sea of yellow, you’ll be witnessing the essence of college basketball tradition! The Michigan Wolverines basketball program was first started in 1909. The Michigan Wolverines would win their first Big Ten Championship in 1921. The ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s would bring more success to the Wolverines under the coaching of Dave Strack, Johnny Orr, and Bill Fieder. In 1989 Steve Fisher took over the coaching job and would manage to win a National Championship that year along with 3 Final Four appearances. 2 of the 3 Final Four appearances would be marred by NCAA violations, which have dogged Michigan Wolverines basketball nearly ever since. Michigan has had a long list of talented players wear the Maize and Blue, including Rudy Tomjanovich, Roy Tarpley, Chris Webber Jalen Rose, and Juwon Howard. The Michigan Wolverines play their home games at Fritz Crisler Arena, also known as “The House Cazzie Built” in reference to Cazzie Russell who led the Michigan Wolverines to 3 Big Ten Championships in the ‘60s. The arena has a capacity of nearly 14,000 spectators.
