Ole Miss first began playing football around 1890. The Rebels achieved their first great success under head coach John Vaught. Vaught would win 6 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championships and 3 national titles and coach 26 All-Americans including legendary quarterback Archie Manning. Tommy Tuberville would help bring the Rebels out of a slump and back to prominence in the 1990’s, but left the program at the height of its success to coach at rival Auburn. Some of the great players to wear the crimson and blue include Archie Manning, Ely Manning, Frank Kinnard, and Deuce McAllister.
The Ole Miss Rebels play their home games at the 60,000 capacity Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi. 2008 Ole Miss Football Preview:
Head Coach Houston Nutt will make his debut in Mississippi this season, as the 2008 Ole Miss Rebels hit the scene. Nutt, who transferred from Arkansas and led the Razorback to an SEC championship game in 2006, is expected to turn this team inside-out. With the help of Jevan Snead, a quarterback transfer from the University of Texas who was sidelined in favor of Colt McCoy, this Rebel team aims to be a contender in the SEC this season. However, this will require that the Rebel defense steps up the play to a higher level than we have seen in previous seasons.
With Snead and Nutt in place, this Rebel team will not be shut out this season. The Rebels will have to make some major adjustments in both offense and defense, but Nutt is going to make some big changes that should alleviate any fear of consistent losing seasons in the future. In two years, this team is going to be a big contender in the SEC. Get out there and give these toughening Rebels a yell!
