The Papajohns.com Bowl is an annual postseason college football bowl game played in Birmingham, Alabama. The bowl is presented by a partnership of operators and sponsors. It is operated and managed by ESPN Regional Television, an ESPN subsidiary, although Papa John’s Pizza is the title sponsor. Game day support and marketing are also provided by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The game features a Conference-USA team against a team from either the Mid-American Conference (MAC) or the Big East Conference, the last two conferences alternating each year.
First played in 2006, the Papajohns.com Bowl is the first bowl game played in Birmingham since the departure of the Hall of Fame Bowl (now the Outback Bowl) to Tampa, Florida in 1985, and the canceling of the All-American Bowl in 1990. The first game was played between the South Florida Bulls and the East Carolina Pirates. South Florida would win the game 24-7 behind the leadership of game MVP running back Benjamin Williams.
