The Phoenix Coyotes are a team to watch in the NHL this season. Although the team has an almost notorious history of poor performance, making their last playoff appearance in 2002, they may have turned a corner. With legend Wayne Gretzky at head coach and with a major shakeup in the team’s management last season, the Coyotes hope to make their big turnaround this year. The Phoenix Coyote franchise was founded in 1972 as the Winnipeg Jets in Winnipeg, Manitoba as part of the World Hockey Association. They were the most successful team in that league. After joining the NHL in 1979, the Jets couldn’t match their former success since they competed in the same division as the perennial playoff favorites - the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers. Financial problems forced the Jets to move to Phoenix in 1996 and become the Coyotes. The Phoenix Coyotes did make the playoffs in 5 of its first 6 seasons, and with a local fanbase boosted by northerners who’d moved to the Arizona area, the team found great support. Poor team management and trades, took their toll, however, and the team began to perform poorly again in the early 2000’s. Gretzky’s arrival marks a new era for the Phoenix Coyotes and the fans are ready for the change. Phoenix Coyotes play their home games at Jobing.com Arena across from the new University of Phoenix Stadium.
