Brigham Young University began its football program officially in 1922. The Cougars found their greatest success when they hired LaVell Edwards as head coach in 1972, and he implemented his unorthodox aggressive passing scheme while other college football teams were relying on run-heavy offenses. BYU’s ability to rack up points fast is something still seen in Provo today. Edwards coached until 2000. They would win a national championship in 1984 and 19 conference titles under coach Edwards. BYU still shows a powerful passing game today and is always an exciting team to watch.
The BYU Cougars play their home games at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. The stadium was opened in 1964 and holds just over 64,000 spectators. LaVell Edwards Stadium is one of the most picturesque settings in all of college football with the Wasatch Range as backdrop and the enormous white stone “Y” on the side of one of the mountains.
