The US Open is tennis 4th major tournament.  It is played each year at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, which is in Queens, New York.  The tournament is played on a hard court surface.  And there are 5 main championships awarded, including; mens singles, womens singles, mens doubles, womens doubles and the mixed doubles.

The US Open has some rules that make it unique among the four tennis majors.  First, the US Open plays tiebreakers in the final set.  The other 3 majors require one player to win by two games in the final set.  Second, the US Open Tennis Tournament is now using instant replay to review calls.  It is only available on the two main courts (Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium), and players are only allowed a few challengs per match.

The first US Open was played in 1881 in Newport, Rhode Island.  It only included mens singles, and was called the US National Singles Championship.  1968 was the first year the US Open included all 5 championships.  1978 was the first year the tournament was played at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York.
