That experience doesn’t stop at the atmosphere and hospitality—Atlanta is also a hotbed of sports. Home to Major League Baseball’s Braves franchise since 1966, the team has become an integral part of the city. The Braves play their home games at picturesque Turner Field, and have been one of the most consistently competitive teams over the last several decades.
It being located in the south, football is a big part of the sporting landscape. The Falcons are Atlanta’s NFL franchise, and play in the legendary Georgia Dome. With a seating capacity of more than 71,000, the venue is one of the largest and oldest in the league and is still used for a number of other sporting events, including the SEC Championship Game and the Chick-fil-A-Bowl.
The Atlanta Hawks of the NBA have shifted their fortunes around and now regularly make the Phillips Arena, which also serves as one of the busiest concert venues in the world, one of the hottest tickets in town.
There is plenty to do outside of sporting events in Atlanta, including a diverse performing arts scene. Specifically, the Fox Theater is among the most recognizable venues in the world. Opened in 1929, this iconic building has hosted everything from Broadway shows, to ballets to movies. The High Museum of Art is among the best in the country. For a day outdoors, the Atlanta Botanical Garden is a treat thanks to its beautiful skywalk that winds its way through an urban forest.
However, for the more adventurous, Six Flags Over Georgia is several miles outside of Atlanta and provides visitors with enough thrills to last them for a while. Specifically, Goliath is one of the first hyper coasters ever built in the U.S., and is certainly a sight to behold. It is a proper compliment to the hustling and exciting metropolis that is Atlanta, Georgia.
