Zilker Park in Austin, Texas is part of the great American tradition of publicly owned urban parks. Like Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and Central Park in New York City, Zilker Park provides a welcome respite for the people of neighboring communities. The park came to prominence in the 1930s when it was recognized as a valuable public space for the citizens of Austin, Texas. It is a beautiful and relaxed event venue
The park hosts many popular annual events. One such event is the well known Austin City Limits music festival. Daily attendance for ACL and large concerts like the Rolling Stones can reach over 60,000 people. Needless to say, although Zilker Park is quite lovely, parking is an issue. There are only a few streets that lead into and out of the park. The quickly become thorough fares for pedestrians and cyclists in addition to motorists. Many drivers will use available parking space in the surrounding neighborhoods. Some people leave their cars home all together and use Austin's public transportation system. Bike racks are available in Zilker Park.
Seating can vary in the park. The Rolling Stones show had reserved seats but ACL is General Admission. Participants are allowed to bring folding chairs, umbrellas (a must for attendance between noon and 6 pm), and bottled water.
During large events the typical accommodations are offered to the event going public: food, souveniers, beverages (alcoholic and non-) the occasional swag booth (aka Free Stuff) and free water and portapotties. Tents with misters and fans have been set up in the past, offering event goers a cool place to sit and relax.
The surrounding neighborhoods of Barton Hills and Bouldin Creek are two of Austin's many desirable places to live and work. They provide many affordable restaurants and bars. There is no need to hurry into and out of the park without sitting and having a cool drink at one of the many fine neighborhood establishments.
The best way to buy tickets for a show in Zilker Park is to purchase directly from the promoter. Barring that, TicketCity is a great source for tickets as we are also located in Austin, Texas
