2013 Texas Bowl Preview

The Golden Gophers are headed back to their second consecutive appearance in the Texas Bowl while the Orange is in its first back to back season with a bowl bid since 1998. Both teams have struggled to make to bowl games year over year but with two growing programs Minnesota and Syracuse have managed to snag a bid in the final year of the Bowl Championship Series.

While both teams ended up at 4-4 in conference play, the Minnesota Golden Gophers were able to secure their early non-conference games to finish up at 8-4. With Phillip Nelson manning the huddle and David Cobb filling in at running back Minnesota has been able to sustain a versatile offense that can be effective both on the ground and through the air. Though they rely on Cobb as the primary offensive weapon, Nelson has plenty of confidence in his two wide outs Engel & Williams both of whom are averaging 16 and 17 yards per catch respectively. With the Orange defense allowing nearly double the amount of passing yards to rushing yards, this is an attack Minnesota will surely look to deploy in the coming Texas Bowl.

Syracuse follows a similar game plan to that of their opponents in which they rely on Jerome Smith and Prince Tyson Gulley to tote the rock. Where they differ from their counterparts is in how they go about the passing game. More than Minnesota, when the Orange go to the air they are looking for a big play. With passing plays of 41, 42, and 65 yards all going for touchdowns the Gophers secondary will have to avoid biting on the play action and stay deep with the wide outs. Minnesota’s front four on defense will give the Syracuse run game a decent go coming from a very run heavy Big Ten conference and only allowing 154 yards per game. The key for Syracuse is simple, keep Minnesota guessing on defense. By mixing in some screens, draws, and play action the Orange will be able to hold the Gophers from loading the box to stop what they inevitably want to do; run the ball.

With both teams coming in to the 2013 Texas Bowl as artists of the run, the winner at Reliant Stadium on December 27 will likely lead the game in passing yards and big plays from the line of scrimmage. Arguably one of the most evenly matched bowl games of 2013, Syracuse vs. Minnesota should be a nail bitter.

2012 Meineke Care Car Bowl of Texas Game Preview:
In 2012 the Texas Bowl saw one of the most aggressive bowl games of the season when Minnesota and Texas Tech came to Reliant Stadium. This shootout came down to the final seconds after seeing a total of eight lead changes. The Red Raiders were able to tie the game up at 31-31 with a touchdown late in the fourth and after a crucial interception Texas Tech would kick the go ahead field goal as time expired to beat the Golden Gophers 34-31.

2011 Meineke Care Car Bowl of Texas Game Preview:
The 2011 Meineke Care Car Bowl is being played on New Year’s Eve day at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. The Meineke Bowl matches up the Texas A&M Aggies versus the Northwestern Wildcats from the Big 10 Conference. Texas A&M will be making the short trip over from College Station and will be led by interim Head Coach, Tim DeRuyter. The Aggies and Northwestern both sport 6-6 overall records, so expect both teams to come out hitting as they try to end the season above .500.

2010 Texas Bowl Game Preview:
Two schools on the upswing will descend on Houston to play in the Texas Bowl. The Illinois Fighting Illini are making their first bowl appearance since the 2008 Rose Bowl and bring with them a high scoring team and a rushing attack that ranked 13th in the nation. True to form, quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase showed throughout the season that is a threat on his legs as well as with his arm, rushing for 815 yards this season. They’re going to have to use that run-first mindset to slow down the top-20 Baylor passing attack in which quarterback Robert Griffin, III threw for almost 3,200 yards and 21 touchdowns.

This game’s sure to give the scoreboard operator a workout, but don’t think that just because Baylor’s in-state the cheering will be one-sided. Illinois claims to have the largest alumni base in the country, so every score will have Reliant Stadium rocking all day long.

2009 Texas Bowl Game Preview:
The 2009 Texas Bowl will be a great college football game that matches up two fantastic teams. The Missouri Tigers will take their high powered passing attack against the running attack of the Navy Midshipmen. Navy vs Mizzou is a contrast in styles that should produce a great game.
