The Emerald Bowl is an annual college football bowl game held at AT&T Park (home of the San Francisco Giants) in San Francisco, CA. The bowl game typically features teams from the Mountain West Conference (MWA) and the Pac-10. In operation since 2002, the game has also been called the San Francisco Bowl and the Diamond Walnut Bowl. The name Emerald Bowl derives from the main sponsor, Diamond Foods, and it’s Emerald of California brand of snack nuts.
Without enough bowl qualifying Pac-10 teams, in 2004 and 2005, Navy and Georgia Tech were chosen to play in those Emerald Bowls against New Mexico and Utah respectively. The Navy-New Mexico game provided college football history with a record-breaking drive. It set records for time of possession with 14 minutes 26 seconds, and number of plays with 26.
The Emerald Bowl is also notably the only bowl held in a stadium used otherwise only for professional baseball. AT&T Park was opened in 2000 and holds over 40,000 spectators. Built in the seaside section of San Francisco called China Basin or South Beach, AT&T Park lets fans combine college football with the experience of seeing the city.
