2012 GATOR BOWL GAME INFO:
Date: January 2, 2012
Location: Jacksonville, Florida
Venue: EverBank Field
Teams: Florida Gators vs. Ohio State Buckeyes
Call it the battle of the ghost of Urban Meyer—except he’s still with us, and he’s currently coaching neither team. However, with 6-6 Ohio State Buckeyes awaiting his arrival in 2012 and 6-6 Florida Gators still trying to find its way after his departure in 2009, there will be a lot of talk about him as January 2nd rolls around. The talk should be about how similar these two teams are (besides their records), and what a great match-up it should be. The only major difference between the team is the Buckeyes’ ability to run more, which should be a great test for an up and coming Florida defense.

Starting in 2007, the game will feature the third place team from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) against a team from either the Big 12, Big East, or Notre Dame as an independent. The game is held at the EverBank Field, home of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars. The game's official name is the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl after the game's main sponsor, a Japanese electronics company.
First played in 1946, the Gator Bowl is one of the oldest college football bowl games. The game was played from 1946 to 1993 in the old Gator Bowl Stadium in Jacksonville before various moves brought the game to the Jaguars' home field. The storied bowl game has showcased such NFL talents as Archie Manning, Earl Campbell, Thurman Thomas, and Donovan McNabb. It is also notoriously the site of Ohio State Buckeyes coach Woody Hayes clothes-lining of a Clemson player on the sidelines in 1978.
The EverBank Field, site of the Gator Bowl game, holds 84,000 spectators, and sits on the footprint of the original Gator Bowl stadium. It is one of the premier football stadiums in the US, and the Gator Bowl continues to be one of college football's premier post-season events.
