The Independence Bowl, officially known as the PetroSun Independence Bowl, is an annual college football postseason bowl game played in Shreveport, Louisiana. The bowl features teams from the Big 12 Conference and Southeastern Conference (SEC) assuming those conferences have bowl-eligible teams available. Previous conference tie-ins include the Southland Conference (no longer a division-I conference), at-large teams, and the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Former sponsors of the game include AB Electrolux Home Products Poulan and Wee Eater, Sanford, and Mainstay Investments.
The Independence Bowl has been played since 1976, getting its name from the US Bicentennial celebration of that year. It was originally called the Bicentennial Bowl. The game is played at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, at the Shreveport Fairgrounds, originally the home of the World Football League team, the Shreveport Steamer. Independence Stadium was considered as a temporary home for the New Orleans Saints after Hurricane Katrina, but the team moved instead to LSU's facilities in Baton Rouge. The stadium was upgraded in the late 1990's and now seats up to nearly 51,000 spectators.
Shreveport is considered to be the gateway city between the South and the West, and since the legalization of riverboat gambling, it has seen a major revitalization. Buy Independence Bowl Tickets and watch teams from two of the country's toughest conferences compete!
