The Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas
The Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas is an annual postseason college football bowl game played in Houston, Texas. The game is played between a representative of the Big 12 Conference and a rotating bid from the Big East and the Conference-USA. The game was first played in 2006 and replaces the Houston Bowl, played from 2000 to 2005. The Houston Bowl was played first as the GalleryFurniture.com bowl at the Astrodome, and was then moved to the new Reliant Stadium as the EV1.Net Houston Bowl. When sponsorship fell through in 2005, the game was discontinued. The NFL network took over management and naming rights to the game in 2005, and the Texas Bowl was born.
In 2011, Meineke Car Care Centers took over naming rights to the Texas Bowl, renaming the event the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. Meineke previously sponored a different bowl between 2005 and 2010.
In 2006 Rutgers finished its historic season against Kansas State at the then Texas Bowl. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights easily handled Kansas State behind the running of star halfback Ray Rice, also the game's MVP. Rutgers won 37-10. There were some interesting mistakes in the first broadcast of the bowl. The announcer was unaware of the New Brunswick-Piscataway, New Jersey location of Rutgers, and referred repeatedly to its satellite campus in Camden. The electronic first down marker malfunctioned for much of the game, and the sideline correspondent, Marshall Faulk failed to appear, making the first Texas Bowl an interesting broadcast to watch.
The Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas is played at Reliant Stadium in Houston. The stadium holds 71,500 spectators and is the home of the NFL's Houston Texans. Opened in 2002, it is one of the most state-of-the-art facilities in the country, and the first one in America to have a retractable roof.
