2013 Hyundai Sun Bowl Preview

The 2013 Hyundai Sun Bowl will be played on Tuesday, December 31st at 12:00pm CST between the UCLA Bruins and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Virginia Tech had another solid season in the ACC, but the end of the year proved to be difficult for the team that finished second in the Coastal Division to Duke. After an opening week 35-10 loss to Alabama, the Hokies won their next six games, including victories over Marshall, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Pitt. Two losses soon followed to Duke and Boston College, leaving them out of the ACC Championship Game they play in often. Virginia Tech is led by senior quarterback Logan Thomas, who threw for 2861 yards and 16 TDs this season. Take out the really bad performance against Duke, and Thomas finished the season with 12 TDs and only 3 INTs.

UCLA was ranked high after beginning the season 5-0, including a 20-point win over #23 Nebraska, but then they ran into the gauntlet of the Pac-12. The Bruins fell in road games at Stanford and Oregon, not putting up much of a fight in either contest. Wins over Colorado, Arizona and Washington got the Bruins to eight wins, with the ninth being the sweet win over USC that every Bruins fan craves. Brett Hundley is the leader of the team emotionally and on the stat sheet, so keep an eye on the sophomore quarterback with a promising future.

2011 Hyundai Sun Bowl Game Preview:
The 2011 Sun Bowl features the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets against the Utah Utes.  Rambling Wreck Head Coach, Paul Johnson, will be seeking 3rd bowl game victory.  Utes Head Coach, Kyle Whittingham, will be looking for his 7th bowl victory against just one bowl loss.  Georgia Tech loves to run the ball, so expect this game to come down to their rushing attack versus the Utes balanced offense.

2010 Sun Bowl Game Preview:
This year's Sun Bowl is going to be quite the reunion, as the independent Notre Dame Fighting Irish come into El Paso to take on the ACC's Miami Hurricanes. Gone are the days when this would've been labeled "Catholics vs. Convicts," but that doesn't mean that the game will be any less intense.

Miami's season could be correctly referred to as tumultuous—Head Coach Randy Shannon has recently been fired, replaced by Jeff Stoutland after a disappointing year, and starting quarterback Jacory Harris' mid-season concussion has paved the way for fourth-stringer Stephen Morris to get major snaps. However, the team that looked to be a lock for the ACC crown still has major players on its side, none more-so than Leonard Hankerson, who through two quarterbacks, still managed to score 12 times through the air. Their defense ranks 21st in points allowed, and they're going to have to show up to stop an Irish team that is on a roll.

Early season losses and mid-season head scratchers against Navy and Tulsa surely meant doom for Brian Kelley's squad. But in one of the more memorable runs of the year, Notre Dame knocked off highly-ranked Utah, Army, and their arch rivals USC at the Coliseum by a combined score of 75-22. Now their defense is clicking (two touchdowns allowed in three games) and stud receiver Michael Floyd is getting in synch with freshman, mid-season replacement quarterback Tommy Rees at the right time. It might not be "Catholics vs. Convicts" anymore, but it looks like there's going to be a great fight in El Paso on New Year's Eve.

2009 Sun Bowl Game Preview:

The 2009 Sun Bowl looks to be a great college football game. The Sun Bowl will matchup the Oklahoma Sooners against the Stanford Cardinal. Stanford comes into the Sun Bowl led by quarterback Andrew Luck and running back Toby Gerhart. OU Head Coach Bob Stoops will bring a stingy defense to El Paso to face the Cardinal. Expect the 2009 Sun Bowl to be one of the best bowl games of the season.
