When the Charlotte Hornets departed for the Big Easy in 2002, it left a hole in the hearts of North Carolina basketball fans all over the state. However, in two short years, Charlotte would have a new team to call its own - the Bobcats - and a new sports and entertainment center was soon to follow. The Time Warner Cable Arena is one of the newer venues in the NBA, having been built in 2005. The structure sits in the heart of downtown Charlotte and is easily accessible from a number of major highways. It also sits near a slew of office buildings, restaurants, transit terminals and shops that have made it a thriving part of downtown. Best of all, the arena has a few stops on the LYNX light rail system, making it a snap to go in and out of the area.
The Time Warner Cable Arena has a number of distinguishing features - the brick and glass building is meant to call to mind Charlotte's warehouse and textile mill past. The arena boasts a capacity of just over 19,000 seats and the biggest video screen of any indoor arena in the country. One unique feature of the video board is a representation of the Charlotte skyline that is built into the top, which gives the structure its own unique charm.
Since the Charlotte Bobcats entered the NBA as an expansion team in 2004, they have brought plenty of excitement to the basketball-crazed fans of North Carolina. The Bobcats have assembled a strong core of young talent and have one of the best front offices in the league led by owner Michael Jordan. The Bobcats made the playoffs in 2010 for the first time in their history, but they were knocked out quickly by the Orlando Magic in the first round. Fans are still waiting for their first orange and blue banner, and hopefully it will come in the near future.
The Time Warner Cable Arena has also housed some of the biggest names in music in its short history. The arena's first ever event in 2005 was a concert by The Rolling Stones, and it has gone on to host such big names as the Fleetwood Mac Unleashed Tour, Taylor Swift Speak Now Tour, Paul McCartney Up and Coming Tour and many more. Whether it's a sporting event or a thrilling musical performance, there are few venues that can match the modern amenities and accessibility of the Time Warner Cable Arena.
