The United Center has been the scene of some of the biggest moments in sports history, and it was built at the perfect time to give fans a chance to see the Chicago Bulls in their glory days and watch the Chicago Blackhawks return to the promised land. Opened in 1994, the 960,000 square foot arena has a capacity of 20,500 for hockey, 21,500 for basketball and can be expanded to 23,500 for concerts and large-scale conventions. The exterior of the building is meant to resemble 1920s architecture, which is popular in Chicago sporting venues like the classic Soldier Field. The arena features a four-sided jumbo screen with scores and highlights, and the designers also recreated the sound of the Barton organ from the old Chicago Stadium to capture the classic charm of the old building.
When the United Center was completed in 1994, the Chicago Bulls were in the midst of an unprecedented title run. After winning the NBA Finals in 1991-93 behind the strength of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, the Bulls would go on another tear between 1996-98 when they won the title three more times. In recent years, it has been the inspired play of guard Derrick Rose that really has the city of Chicago buzzing, and with some roster tweaking, the Bulls look to regain their former glory in the coming years.
The Chicago Blackhawks have a rich history as one of the original members of the National Hockey League, and their 2010 title run ended years of futility following their last championship win in 1961. Behind the stellar play of Tomas Kopecky, Patrick Kane and Dustin Byfuglien, the Blackhawks beat the Philadelphia Flyers in six games to bring the Stanley Cup back to Chicago. For Blackhawks' fans, it was vindication after years of falling short in the playoffs, and the arena enjoyed its first professional sports title since the Bulls dynasty in the '90s.
The United Center is an important stop on the North American concert circuit, and the venue has hosted musicians and entertainers from a variety of genres. From Bruce Springsteen to Britney Spears, countless big names have played at the United Center and it has the expansive size to accommodate these grand spectacles. The arena's fabulous amenities, storied past and incredible versatility have made it one of the preferred sporting venues in the United States.
