College Basketball Ticket Information

With a regular season average ticket price hitting the scale at just $70, grabbing a seat in your favorite schools arena is far more “financially” do-able than heading to their football stadium. In part due to the number of games on the basketball schedule, other factors include a team’s rank in the AP poll, highly recruited players, and contention in the most recognizable tournament in the country; the NCAA Tournament. We’ll get to the tournament a little later, for now a look at some of the biggest tickets in the college basketball world takes us to Durham, North Carolina.

The Duke Blue Devils have been atop the highest ticket price list for multiple years running. In the 2012-13 season, the average price to catch a Blue Devils home game came in at $265. After a deep run in the 2013 NCAA Tournament that price nearly doubled the following year keeping Duke on top at $450 a ticket. As expected, the traditional blue blood programs make up most of the top ten highest ticket prices in college basketball with the Kansas Jayhawks at $330, Kentucky Wildcats at $253, North Carolina Tar Heels at $111, and Indiana Hosiers at $109. Teams usually in the mix for a national title run make up some of the most sought after tickets of the season. Once out of the top ten the average college basketball ticket price begins to take hold as seen in stand out teams like Michigan State, Syracuse, Ohio State, and Louisville all showcasing top notch basketball for under $80.

The crazed tradition known as March Madness carries a much higher price tag, but as many attendees will tell you, it’s well worth every penny. Despite conference changes, the Big East still carries the title of having the most expensive conference tournament ticket at $181, though it did drop from $211 from the previous season. With Joel Embiid and Andrew Wiggins bright future leading the Big 12, the conference’s tournament stood in a close second at $167 per ticket. The Pac 12 tournament featured a host of top talent in Las Vegas leaving fans with a $156 average price tag. Filling in the gaps are the ACC Tournament at $153, SEC Tournament at $144, Big Ten Tournament at $96, and the American at just under $80.

Cap off the conference tournaments with a visit to any one of the multiple NCAA Tournament locations. From some of the most impressive football stadiums around to state of the art basketball arenas, the NCAA Tournament holds no limits as to where games are played. This can be one of the most important factors to the average ticket price in the 2nd & 3rd rounds as proximity to the schools in competition will reflect attendance and in turn affect demand. In 2014 the 2nd & 3rd rounds in St. Louis rang in as the highest ticket price at $230 as the neighboring Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas State Wildcats participated in this portion of the tournament. Once you arrive to the Final Four, location is merely just that, the location of the games. Last year’s Final Four finale in Dallas’ AT&T Stadium ran a total of $640 for semifinals games and $615 for the championship game. While the 4 teams that make it to the Final Four carry some weight in the games average ticket prices, the Final Four carries a prestige of its own that keeps a demand unlike no other college sporting event around.
