Georgia Tech first played intercollegiate basketball in 1906 under Coach Chapman, winning two of three games their inaugural season. Famed football coach John Heisman would eventually coach the team, as well as coaching football and baseball. Bobby Cremins would put Georgia Tech on the map in basketball in the 1980’s and ‘90s. Cremins led the team to its first ACC tournament title in 1985 and the Georgia Tech’s first Final Four appearance in 1990. Some of the great players to wear the Yellow Jackets gold and white include Stephan Marbury, Matt Harpring, Dennis Scott, and John Salley.
In the first decade of the new millenium, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were revitalized under head coach Paul Hewitt, who led the team to a national title game berth in 2004. The 2003-2004 team won the preseason NIT basketball tournament, and ended Duke's 41-game winning streak. Though the Yellow Jackets lost to UConn in the 2004 National Title game, this was the second-ever appearance for any Georgia Tech team in a national title game.
Georgia Tech plays their home games at Alexander Memorial Coliseum in Atlanta, Georgia. Opened in 1956, the arena holds just over 9,000 spectators. Visitors to Alexander will be awed as they enter onto the main concourse with entrances that are at the same level as the highest seats, giving a view of the court below and the sweeping arches that hold the ceiling several hundred feet above the court. The arena is notoriously loud and every seat is a good one as all the seats are very close to the floor.
