The University of Miami's basketball program has rollercoastered during its lifespan. In 1972, the Board of Trustees suspended the program due to insufficient finances and low attendance. However, the program was reinstated before the 1985-86 season. The Hurricanes basketball team was minimally competitive until Miami hired Leonard Hamilton to coach the struggling team. By the end of the decade, Hamilton led the Hurricanes to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2000. During the 2007-08 season, the Hurricanes exceeded expectations and started the season on 12 straight wins. The Canes finished the year 23-11, and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament before being knocked out.
