2011-2012 Virginia Cavaliers College Basketball Preview:
The University of Virginia's program appears pretty stacked heading into the 2011-2012 basketball season. The Cavs bring in the seventh-ranked recruiting class in all of college basketball, and the highest ranked among others in the ACC. With the inclusion of new talent and returning players the Cavs are going to silence a lot of detractors this year.
Much of the team's accolades is due to new recruits Justin Anderson and Evan Nolte. Anderson, a small forward who stands at 6' 5", is known for his ability to hit big shots at the buzzer. He's a clutch player who can make the big shot when the team needs it most. Nolte, 6' 8", can extend defenses considerably with his talent for dropping three pointers like rain.
Coach Tony Bennett is looking to add depth on the defensive side of this court this season. Now in his third season, Bennett is gravitating toward establishing more control when the opponent possesses the ball. The team did well in regard to defense last year, but will likely improve even more.

The University of Virginia Cavaliers basketball program has historically been one of the toughest college programs in the nation. Playing in the ACC, one of the most competitive conferences in the country, the Virginia Cavaliers have once again become a top contender for conference title honors, and consistently making strong impacts on the NCAA Tournament. Walking through the Jeffersonian architecture to enter the JPJ Arena is awe-inspiring. This mix of classical architecture and modern sound and video capabilities is setting the standard for college basketball arenas. You’ll hear the sound of “Wah-hoo-wah!” spread through the arena as the fans cheer on their squad. A Virginia Cavaliers home game at the brand new John Paul Jones Arena will be an exciting experience watching the team fight their way to the top of the ACC.
Virginia Cavaliers basketball was at the height of its success in the 1980’s when only the University of North Carolina Tarheels were more successful in the ACC. The decade even had the Virginia Cavaliers topping perennial favorites, the Duke Blue Devils. The 1990’s and early 2000’s saw a downturn in Virginia Cavaliers’s success. The UVA Cavaliers basketball team had even become somewhat of a joke in relation to the success of the Cavaliers football program. Times have changed, with the team garnering a share of the 2006 ACC Title and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Virginia Cavaliers basketball plays their home games at the new John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia. The new arena holds more than 15,000 spectators. In February 2007, one of the first memorable games was played at the “JPJ” when the Cavaliers took on #8 Duke University. Virginia was down 8 points in the final 3 minutes of play and managed to hold the Blue Devils scoreless and mount a comeback to pull of the upset.
