Baylor University 2011-12 Men’s College Basketball Preview
Last year was a bit of a disappointment for the Waco, Texas-based Bears. Despite a fantastic, Elite Eight showing the year before and pre-season buzz surrounding their incoming freshman Perry Jones, Baylor underachieved and missed the NCAAs completely. However, a new year brings new opportunities for the Bears, and despite the loss of All-Big 12 player LaceDarius Dunn, Scott Drew’s club is looking to make a return run at the NCAA Championship.
The loss of Dunn will be offset by a number of great front court players like Jones, J’Mison Morgan and Qunicys Miller and Acy. Jones, specifically, will be the focal point of the team, coming in as the Big 12 Player of the Year, possibly an award won for not entering the NBA Draft last year where he would have been selected as a top lottery pick. Small forward Miller comes in with his high school teammate shooting guard Duce Bello to give the Bears a strong inside-outside game that has been simmering for more than half a decade.
While they have an outstanding front five, what will push Baylor to surpassing last year’s level will be its outstanding bench. Acy, in particular, was named Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year in 2010-11. Perry Jones will be the focal point for defenses, but it will be a strong overall team effort that will allow the Bears to get the honey of another tournament run in March.
