2011-2012 DePaul Blue Demons College Basketball Preview:
DePaul Blue Demon head coach Oliver Purnell is optimistic heading into the 2011-2012 season. The squad is looking to improve from last year's performance, which featured a great number of closely contested games. With a number of new players and underclassmen, the squad is young but eager to learn from the coach who is now in his second year with the program.
Cleveland Melvin is looking for another dominant performance in his sophomore year. The 6' 8" forward kept lean in the offseason and was named the No. 2 player in Sports Illustrated's list of Illinois' top 30 college hoops players. As the Big East Freshman of the Year last season, Melvin established himself by putting up 17.4 points during division gameplay.
Returning senior Krys Faber will be dominating the boards down in the post for the Blue Demons. This big boy put some muscle on over the summer and bulked up to 258 pounds. At 6' 10", the added girth will have DePaul's opponents thinking twice when getting near the bucket. This basketball squad has a lot of high hopes for the upcoming season, and with nowhere to go but up, fans should expect some great performances from the team.

DePaul’s basketball program gained notoriety after head coach Ray Meyer took over the reins in 1942. He would coach the Blue Demons for 42 years winning a national championship in 1945, posting 37 winning seasons, twelve 20 plus win seasons, 21 post-season appearances, and a Final Four appearance in 1979. Some of the great players to play at DePaul include George Mikan (one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players), Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings, and Rod Strickland.
The DePaul Blue Demons plays their home games at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. The 20,000 seat arena was opened in 1980 and is one of the largest college basketball arenas in the country.
