The Georgetown Hoyas are one of the premiere teams in all of college basketball. The Hoyas are one of the legendary teams in the sport, and have a long and rich tradition of success. From the successes GU had with Hall of Fame coach John Thompson to the strong teams led by his son, John Thompson III. Georgetown basketball has continued to be one of 'the teams' in NCAA basketball. Who could forget the great Hoyas teams in the 80's led by superstar Patrick Ewing. Playing in a few Final Fours and winning a National Championship in 1984. Georgetown plays their home basketball games at the Verizon Center in Washington DC. The Verizon Center is a multi-use facility in DC that caters to concerts, sports and other events. It is also the home of the Washington Wizards, Capitals and Mystics. The Verizon Center opened in 1997 and has a capacity for basketball of approximately 20,000 fans. The Verizon Center is owned by Washington Sports & Entertainment.
The Georgetown Hoyas play in the Big East Conference. The Hoyas are an NCAA Division I program.
