2011-2012 Notre Dame Fighting Irish College Basketball Preview:
There are no Quasimodos on this year’s Notre Dame squad. The offseason proved to be big for the university, which was already dominant in many facets of the game last season. Fans were sad to see senior Ben Hansbrough leave, but his void is going to be filled by an elite new class of freshmen that will be sculpted under the direction of coach Mike Brey.
In 10 seasons with the Irish, coach Brey has accumulated an impressive collection of victories that have seen his teams enter the NCAA tournament seven times. With graduate student Tim Abromaitis at the helm, it's difficult to see how the squad will veer from their past successes. Abromaitis was named to the Preseason Top 50 list for the John R. Wooden Award and will be a force whether shooting the three-ball or taking the rock to the hoop.
Team captain Scott Martin has missed the past two seasons due to injury and a transfer but is now healthy and looking to show the fans his rare set of skills. He's big at 6' 8" but handles the ball extremely well and can score from a variety of locations on the hardwood. The Irish have never looked better. With some real athletes out on the floor, look for them to shoot their opponent's lights out come November.

The University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish is a highly successful program. The team has earned over 1,600 wins and have appeared in 29 NCAA Tournaments, making them one of the deepest teams in college basketball. Like Notre Dame's football team, Irish basketball has dealt several upsets to number one ranked teams, including the halt of UCLA's 88 game winning streak in 1974. The Fighting Irish hold two national championships of their own, and reached another Final Four in 1978. The Fighting Irish are the first Big East team to remain undefeated at home two straight seasons.
Notre Dame plays basketball at the Edmund P. Joyce Center in Notre Dame, Indiana. The arena, opened in 1968, seats 11,418 fans and is host to both the Notre Dame basketball and volleyball teams. The center will undergo a $24.6 million renovation and will be renamed the Purcell Center after the Notre Dame alumnus and trustee Phillip J. Purcell.
