2011-2012 Pittsburgh Panthers College Basketball Preview:
A combination of new talent and the return of outstanding upperclassmen may be the reason the Panthers go deep into the NCAA tournament this year. The squad was absolutely dominant in the Big East in 2010-11, and finished up with a 15-3 conference record. With a top-15 showing in the pre-season, there are big expectations for Pitt in the land of big sandwiches.
One reason for the team's outstanding performance will be senior Ashton Gibbs, a 6' 2" guard who has already been heralded as one of the school’s best players ever. He's led the club in shooting for the past two years, and has hit double digits in scoring in 54 of his last 65 games. He's also a clutch player who can hit the big shot at the buzzer.
Rounding out the team will be power forward Nasir Robinson, an explosive force who helped guide the team to a Big East title last year and will surely put his hard work in the off season on display for the fans. He's known as an aggressive and tough inside player who provides excellent defensive and rebounding skills. With Robinson and Gibbs out on the floor, look for the Panthers to place themselves at the top of the Big East again.

At a Pittsburgh Panthers game you can walk through the McCarl Hall of Champions and tour Pittsburgh’s storied athletic past. For the best experience, sit in one of the courtside luxury suites, the only such boxes in all the NCAA. The “Oakland Zoo”, Pittsburgh Panthers’ rowdy student section dressed all in gold and leading the Pittsburgh fans and cheering on the Panthers is a spectacle you have to see!
The Pittsburgh Panthers first fielded a basketball team in 1905. The team won two national championships in 1928 and 1930 with famed coach Henry Clifford “Doc” Carlson and with national Player of the Year and three-time All-American Charlie Hyatt. The Pittsburgh Panthers would also win 4 conference championships during Carlson’s tenure as coach. After more conference success in the 1980’s, Pittsburgh Panthers would see great success again after Ben Howland became coach in 1999. Led next by Howland’s assistant, and current coach, Jamie Dixon, this new era of Pittsburgh Panthers basketball has landed the team in the top-10 nearly every season, and given Pittsburgh record breaking trips to the Big East Championship and the Sweet Sixteen. Pittsburgh Panthers has had a long list of college stars including Charlie Hyatt and Brandin Knight.
The Pittsburgh Panthers play their home games at Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “The Pete” was opened in 2002 and was named “the toughest place to play” for visiting teams in 2006. Experiencing the “Oakland Zoo” as they cheer on the Panthers and harass the visiting squad is a classic college basketball experience.
