2011-2012 Providence Friars College Basketball Preview:
Although the Friars had a few setbacks last season, the players are ready to put the past behind them and look forward to the future. New Coach Ed Cooley is going to provide fans with new structure, and may build upon the team's former successes. Cooley is a native of Rhode Island and was a talented player in the basketball program at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts, where he was a captain for three years.
Those leadership qualities will be on display come November. The team has some new additions, including 6' 6" forward LaDontae Henton of Lansing, Michigan. Henton averaged 22.2 points per game through all four years of High School and 25.2 buckets his senior year. He is one of only four players in Central Michigan to have scored 2,000 points, a stat that puts him in the company of Earvin "Magic" Johnson.
On defense, Providence will see the return of 6'9" Junior Bilal Dixon. Considered a strong rebounder and shot blocker, he's known for picking up the occasional double-double and will most likely be adding a few more to his growing statline this season. The only way to go is up for the Friars - look for them to improve by leaps and bounds this year.

The Providence Friars basketball team was highly successful in the 1960's, winning the 1961 and 1963 NIT basketball championships. The Friars have received 15 NCAA Tournament berths and 16 NIT berths in their history. Notable coaches including Joe Mullaney and Rick Pitino have emerged from the program.
