So many great games! As a college basketball fan, it's always great to be able to watch four straight days of great games. In the Big Ten, every team can compete, and you never know who will win - which makes it even more exciting. What's really great though, is Indianapolis does a wonderful job turning the entire downtown area into the Big Ten tournament. Certain streets are re-named with each Big Ten mascot, and restaurants are designated for each team to meet other fellow fans of your school. It helped that I'm a Badger fan and happened to go the year they won, in 2008, but really, being surrounded by basketball for four straight days was awesome, and Conseco Fieldhouse was the perfect place to do it. I.U is apart of my families success! I.U mens basketball has a fantastic program. The head coach Tom Crean is doing a great job with his team this year. Every team member brings some kind of energy to every game which leads to their success. I am glad the teammates this have brougth game! January 10, 2012

The Big Ten Conference dates back all the way back to its formation in 1896, and is the nation's oldest athletic conference. It has been known primarily as a football conference during much of its history, but has seen dramatic growth in men's basketball over the past few decades. The conference has seen hugely successful teams like Michigan's Fab Five in the early '90s and the stellar Bob Knight-coached Indiana teams of the 1980s.

With the epic growth of the NCAA Tournament, the Big Ten decided to get in on the action and became one of the last conferences to create its own tournament in 1996 instead of relying on the regular season record. The first tournament was held in 1998 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, with the University of Michigan taking the title. The following year, Iowa shocked the basketball world by becoming the lowest seed in Big Ten tournament history to win the championship after knocking off Indiana in the title game.

With the expanded pool of NBA-ready talent that the Big Ten features each year, the playoff system has undoubtedly strengthened the conference and the quality of recruits that are now choosing Big Ten schools over traditional powerhouses. Additionally, four times during the tournament's history the winner has made it all the way to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. This elevated level of competition has assuredly prepared many Big Ten teams for the spotlight of the national playoff, the greatest example being Michigan State capturing the sole National Championship in 2000 under the direction of coach Tom Izzo.

Over the course of the tournament's history, Ohio State has taken the most titles out of all of the participants by winning in 2002, 2007, 2010 and 2011. Michigan State, Illinois and Wisconsin each have two championships, while Purdue won its first in 2009.

Traditionally, the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament alternated between the United Center in Chicago and the Banker's Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, but Indy enjoyed a five-year run starting in 2008. The 2013 season will feature the cycling between the two venues again to give Big Ten fans from all over the region a chance to see their teams in action. With a bevy of growing basketball powerhouses, the Big Ten looks to continue its growth as one of the strongest athletic conferences in the United States.
