The Hoosiers first began playing intercollegiate basketball in 1901. As of 2007, Indiana has won 5 NCAA Championships under coaches Branch McCracken and Bob Knight. Additionally the Hoosiers have 8 Final Four appearances and 20 conference regular season titles. Who can forget the 1975-76 season when Bob Knight led the team to an NCAA title and an undefeated season? Indiana is the last team in college basketball to accomplish this. Steve Alford, Calbert Cheaney, Isiah Thomas, and Keith Smart are among the great players to have played for Indiana.
The Hoosiers' first great head coach was Everett Dean, an All-American player for IU during his college career. Dean led the Hoosiers to three conference titles, and solidified the team as a mover and shaker in the Big Ten Conference. To extend the tradition of player-to-coach, Branch McCracken was a player under Everett Dean, and went on to become coach of the Hoosiers. Under McCracken, Indiana would capture two NCAA national championships. Nobody will ever forget the power of the Hoosiers under Bob Knight, who led the Hoosiers to three more national titles.
The Hoosiers play their home games at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana. Opened in 1972, the arena holds almost 17,500 fans. Visitors will be struck by the sweeping architecture and unique shape of the building, as well as the intensity of the crowd at a Hoosiers game.
