The University of Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team is always a top team in the Big Ten Conference and an NCAA Tournament contender. The Iowa Hawkeyes have been Big Ten regular season champions 8 times. The team has also won 2 Big Ten Conference tournaments and reached the NCAA Tournament Final Four 3 times, one of which would take them to the national championship in 1956 only to lose to San Francisco. Under the leadership of legendary coaches Lute Olsen and Tom Davis Iowa has established itself as a true powerhouse year in and year out.
The Iowa Hawkeyes started playing basketball in 1902. The team’s history started out with some success but it wasn’t until 1923 and the coaching of Sam Barry that Iowa became a Big Ten champion. The Depression Era brought about mediocre results and NCAA rules violations, including a brief suspension from Big Ten play. Lute Olsen would take the Iowa Haweyes to their last NCAA Final Four Appearance and win the Iowa Hawkeye’s last Big Ten regular season championship. Tom Davis would manage to coach the team to an Iowa-record 30 wins in a season 1986. The team looks to fight for a Big Ten title and will likely make another good run into the NCAA Tournament.
