The Spartans have always been one of the nations top ranked basketball programs but truly hit their stride in 1990. Michigan State found a way to the NCAA Tournament every year since '90 with the exception of three years, '93, '96 and '97. After the '97 tournament the Spartans made 16 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances one of which crowned them as national champions (2000). In one of the most notable NCAA championships, the 1979 tournament ended with Michigan State beating out Indiana State for the title. This championship would later become the beginning of the legendary Magic Johnson - Larry Bird saga that would extend into the NBA for many years to come.
As far as tournament performances go, only six schools have appeared in the Final Four more than Michigan State as well as accumulated a higher tournament winning percentage. The Spartans also carry the third longest active streak of NCAA bids with their 16 consecutive appearances from 1998 - 2013.
