2011-2012 Michigan Wolverines College Basketball Preview:

A wolverine may be an appropriate mascot for a team that has been so dominant in college basketball. Last year saw the University of Michigan squad enter the second round of the NCAA tournament and this year the boys in blue and gold could score a path right into the Final Four.

With sophomore guard Tim Hardaway, Jr. controlling the ball, the team could easily establish itself early in the hyper competitive Big Ten division. Hardaway, a physical 6' 5" guard, played on Team USA in the offseason and put up 9.4 points per game. He will be looking to build off a breakout freshman performance from last season that saw this Miami, Florida, native capture a spot on the All Big Ten Freshman Team, the only non-Ohio player to do so.

Coach John Beilein is looking to implement the 1-3-1 defense for the coming season, a concept that helped him bring the Wolverines back into division contention. With 6' 10" forward Blake McLimans, now in his third year, fans may see some more blocked shots in the lane. The season is really heating up and many believe that Michigan will likely secure a spot in the top of the Big Ten this year.

A home game at Fritz Crisler Arena is great place to watch the new era of Wolverines basketball unfold. As you walk into the arena you can’t miss the glass cases filled with trophies from the Michigan Wolverines’ illustrious past. During the game you’ll hear the courtside student section, the “Maize Rage”, make life tough for visiting teams. In a sea of yellow, you’ll be witnessing the essence of college basketball tradition!

The Michigan Wolverines basketball program was first started in 1909. The Michigan Wolverines would win their first Big Ten Championship in 1921. The ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s would bring more success to the Wolverines under the coaching of Dave Strack, Johnny Orr, and Bill Fieder. In 1989 Steve Fisher took over the coaching job and would manage to win a National Championship that year along with 3 Final Four appearances. 2 of the 3 Final Four appearances would be marred by NCAA violations, which have dogged Michigan Wolverines basketball nearly ever since. Michigan has had a long list of talented players wear the Maize and Blue, including Rudy Tomjanovich, Roy Tarpley, Chris Webber Jalen Rose, and Juwon Howard.

The Michigan Wolverines play their home games at Fritz Crisler Arena, also known as “The House Cazzie Built” in reference to Cazzie Russell who led the Michigan Wolverines to 3 Big Ten Championships in the ‘60s. The arena has a capacity of nearly 14,000 spectators.
