The Purdue Boilermakers basketball team is one of the more storied teams in the Big Ten Conference and is always a tough team to beat in the NCAA Tournament. The Purdue Boilermakers hold a record for Big Ten Conference Championships with 21. Purdue is also the only team in the Big Ten with a winning record against all other Big Ten teams. Purdue Boilermakers also has 2 NCAA Tournament Final Four appearances along with one Helms Foundation National Championship. A home game at Mackey Arena is usually a deafening experience and one you’ll never forget. You’ll sit in a sea of gold and black. You’ll hear the beginnings of “Hail Purdue” being sung as nearly everyone in the arena stands to take part in the school’s fight song. Between the deafening crowd volume and the action on the court it’s a one of a kind college basketball experience.
Purdue Boilermakers basketball began in 1896. The team’s early success was under the leadership of coach Ward “Piggy” Lambert, who would coach the team for 28 years. Lambert would coach 16 All-Americans and lead the Purdue Boilermakers to 228 Big Ten wins, 11 Big Ten Championships, and one National Championship in 1932. Only Bobby Knight and Gene Keady have more Big Ten wins than Lambert. Gene Keady would take the reigns in 1981 and start the Purdue Boilermakers next era of success. Keady would surpass Lambert as Purdue’s winningest coach. Keady’s teams would win 6 Big Ten Championships and make 17 NCAA Tournament appearances. Some of the Purdue Boilermakers star players include UCLA coach John Wooden, Rick Mount, and Glenn Robinson.
Purdue Boilermakers plays their home games at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana. The arena holds over 14,000 spectators and is considered one of the very loudest arenas in college basketball in part because of its domed aluminum roof.
