2011-2012 East Carolina Pirates College Basketball Preview:
The East Carolina Pirates had a decent season last year going 8-8 in the conference and 18-15 overall. This year, a few changes may see the boys in purple and gold attain another level, as some new editions to the roster and returning players may provide some flavor to the offense and defense.
Going into his senior year, Darrius Morrow has been selected to the 2011-2012 Preseason All-Conference USA second team. Over the course of last year, Morrow averaged 21.7 points and 13.3 rebounds, a double-double, which helped put the team into the conference semi-finals. Come November fans may see the 6' 8" power forward do even more to bring the team deeper into this contest.
On defense, the twin powers of Yasin Kolo, from Goettingen, Germany, and Austin Steed out of Hephzibah, Georgia, will put their physiques in the middle of the paint to discourage penetration. Steed is a graduate student who used to play some good ball for the Gamecocks and Kolo, a freshman, is big enough to post up or muscle up and pull down some crucial rebounds. Look for some improvement on both sides of the floor as the Pirates head into the new year.
