2011-2012 Memphis Tigers College Basketball Preview:

The ninth-ranked Tigers posted an incredible 25-9 overall record last year that some say may put them into another NCAA tournament appearance if they continue their winning ways. Coach Josh Pastner, now in his third year, is the man to thank for the recent success of this team and fans could possibly see another big season out of the cats.

Pastner's record for the last two seasons is 49-20. He'll have some help in order to extend his excellent record in freshman Adonis Thomas, an X-factor going into November. He's big for a 6' 6" forward at 222 pounds and is able to put up numbers in all areas of the court. Thomas is also a winner, as he helped the USA men's basketball team to a gold medal performance at the 2010 FIBA U17 Championships in Germany.

Alongside Thomas will be sophomores Will Barton, Joe Jackson and Tarik Black, all athletes who were named to the 2011-2012 preseason All-Conference USA teams. Barton was the team's leading scorer last year and is expected to help on the defensive side as well. Fans should see another outstanding performance out of the Tigers squad this year.

MEMPHIS TIGERS BASKETBALL FACTS:
Location:
Memphis, Tennessee
Stadium: FedExForum
Conference: Conference USA
Rivals: Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles

The Memphis Tigers first fielded a basketball team in 1920, while the school was then known as the West Tennessee State Normal School. The earliest games were played at a local high school, YMCA and in a room on campus known as the Normal Cage for its extremely cramped environment. The Memphis Tigers made the Final Four in 1973, 1985 and 2008, though their 1985 appearance was stripped by the NCAA for infractions against the program and then head coach Dana Kirk. In the 2000's, the Tigers have made a reputation for themselves as one of the teams to beat every year in Conference USA.

The Tigers play their home games at the FedEx Forum in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. The arena is also the home of the Memphis Grizzlies NBA franchise. Along with basketball, the arena hosts ice hockey games, concerts and special entertainment events. The interior of the FedEx Forum was designed to reflect the rich tradition of music that envelops the city, and there are several paintings and murals that depict famous musicians from the area.
